Founded in 1988 as the first private institution of higher education in the United Arab Emirates and the Gulf region, Ajman University (AU) is now being recognized as an emerging leader on the global academic map.

The 2020 QS World University Rankings lists AU in the top 800 universities globally and among the top 10 worldwide for international students and faculty! The &ldquo;Top 50 Under 50&rdquo; QS Rankings names AU as one of the top 150 young universities in the world. Even our distinct location in the Dubai/Sharjah/Ajman corridor is ranked by QS as the 61st best student destination on the planet. Recently, Ajman University earned Five QS Stars in three ratings categories -- Social Responsibility, Inclusiveness and Learning Environment. Marker-based measurement has been used to assess human body positioning but human marker tracking has yet to make the transition from the laboratory to personal computing devices such as smartphones. A novel smartphone-based approach could use a fiducial marker system. Fiducial markers are applicable to augmented reality robotics and other applications where a camera-object pose is required and tracked. However few fiducial systems can be implemented on a mobile phone because of the processing requirements for identifying and tracking the tags in realtime. In augmented reality virtual information is shared with the real world to further enhance a person's view of the environment; therefore this illusion is directly associated with good registration of both virtual and real worlds. Measurement applications also require accurate and fast registration so that real objects are in alignment with virtual objects in real-time. Our research reviewed and evaluated various fiducial marker systems by developing an Android mobile application for real-time biomechanical measurement. A test was designed for two nominated fiducial systems to compare their speed and robustness on the mobile phone. AprilTag2 was selected as the best fiducial marker option for this application. © 2019 IEEE.

Fiducial marker approach for biomechanical smartphone-based measurements

The value of education can never be overstated, and the dangers of its ignorance can never be overestimated. The most important outcome of education is to be independent and lead a dignified life. Every individual has the right to education, however, those with special needs are often overlooked. The disproportionate representation of minority students in special education programs has its roots in a long history of educational segregation and discrimination. A number of factors may contribute to disproportionality, including poverty, special education processes, inequity in general education, issues of behavior management, lack of effective technological tools and inadequate professional development of instructors. The paper focuses on addressing some of these barriers in educating challenged individuals, developing a clear understanding of inclusive education, designing and implementing Assistive Technology (AT) to empower them, training educators and enhance the education for special needs. It also proposes various vocational training activities for mainstream work and discusses its impact on challenged individuals and their guardians.

Empowering Challenged Children Through Education With Assistive Technology

Loss of communication with the base station when a firefighter's radio signal is blocked by building walls can have serious consequences. In case of GPS failure, firemen often run into danger, unable to track their way out and transmit their whereabouts to the base station. Indoor Tracking System presented in this paper serves as a solution to this problem. It is an economical system that provides wireless on-site communication to transmit real-time position information of a firefighter in danger by tracking and tracing the firefighter’s incident path. The implementation of this system involves the fusion of data from various sensors acquired from an Androidbased Smartphone. The successful testing and analysis of distance calculation by the system is also presented.

Smartphone-based Indoor Tracking System for Firefighters in Action

This paper presents an autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle developed for Civil Defense applications. It provides operational support to fire-fighters performing their mission in difficult indoor environments in high-rise buildings during loss of communication between fire-fighters and base station. It augments a 2-D indoor tracking system by providing the third dimension corresponding to the floor level where a fire-fighter is trapped. In this way, the position of a trapped fire-fighter in a high-rise building is completely identified. Other features of the developed system include the ability to recognize humans in poor visibility conditions resulting from smoke or at night, provision of a grappling trigger to carry extra load for rescue missions, and stable flight operation.
