The tragedy of the ship Concordia has deeply affected everyone, experts and designers, and people who have never set foot on a boat. This paper presents an hypothesis on how research in interior design, taking inspiration from other project contexts, can contribute to passenger safety. Taking cues from the world of art installations and technologies of light, it is possible to lighten the interior fake decor, while maintaining the objectives of creating a fantasy world, dramatically different from that of all days. At the same time it is necessary to reconsider the options for the furniture, in relation to their weight and their being - or not - fixed to the floor. The aim is to give a contribution to the reflections on interior design of cruise ships, pointing out how research could find innovative solutions for design and safety. © Associazione Italiana di Tecnica Navale.
