Design of an uniaxial dielectric waveguide filter with embedded metamaterial using mode matching technique

Filters containing metamaterials offer advantages for filter design problems. However, few methods to accurately model embedded metamaterials exist. In addition to the modeling challenges presented by metamaterials, most dielectrics exhibit uniaxial properties that will undoubtedly affect predicted filter performance if not accounted for. This paper analyzes waveguide filters filled with uniaxial media and metamaterials using the mode matching technique (MMT) and the results are applied to a Ka band SIW filter. The design specifications for the proposed filter are 32.5GHz center frequency, 6% bandwidth. This same filter is then embedded with metamaterial to illustrate the metamaterial's effect on performance. Good agreement between simulated and measured results are shown.
