Abstract

This chapter examines the innovative application of colloidal silica in drug delivery systems, highlighting its transformative impact on pharmaceutical science. Colloidal silica, due to its unique properties like high surface area, biocompatibility, and modifiable surface chemistry, emerges as a promising carrier for various therapeutic agents. This chapter delves into the mechanisms by which colloidal silica enhances drug stability, controlled release, and targeted delivery, effectively overcoming challenges such as poor solubility and limited bioavailability of certain drugs. It also explores the latest advancements in silica-based drug delivery, including surface modifications for targeted therapy and its role in the delivery of both hydrophilic and hydrophobic drugs. The biodegradation and excretion pathways of colloidal silica, ensuring safety in pharmaceutical applications, are also discussed. By synthesizing current research, this chapter underscores the potential of colloidal silica to revolutionize drug delivery, offering insights for future research and development in the field.
