Abstract

Nanoclays are a type of nanoparticle that has layered structures made up of mineral silicates. This type of nanoparticle is collectively referred to as nanoclays. The classification of nanoclays into a number of unique groups requires taking into account both the nanoparticle shape and the chemical makeup of the nanoclays. The minerals montmorillonite, bentonite, kaolinite, hectorite, and halloysite are included in these classifications. Nanoclays have a wide range of uses, many of which are quite significant because nanoclays do not support combustion. They may be found in several fire-resistant plastic formulations. When plastic is combined with nanoclays, the amount of material that may catch fire is significantly reduced. In addition, the burning of the plastic creates a layer that stops further burning of the plastic from occurring. As a form of additive for plastic, nanoclay may be found in food packaging films as well as beverage bottles. This results in the plastic being strengthened and less oxygen penetrating the film, which results in the food having a longer shelf life and less carbon dioxide escaping from the bottle. Plastics with nanoclay added to them offer increased barrier and abrasion characteristics, as well as stronger tensile strength, lower thermal expansion, excellent surface qualities, and extremely good processing properties. Paints are another major use for nanoclay, which is utilized widely. Nanoclays can bind cesium and can be utilized to decrease radioactive pollution. After observing all these applications, we must identify the various synthesis procedures to prepare nanoclays. In this chapter, we have reported various synthesis methods to prepare nanoclays.
