Security-Enhanced MQTT Platform for Green Internet of Things (IoT) Communication

Abstract

Green Internet of Things is an energy-efficient IoT method designed to reduce the global warming impact of existing IoT applications. Sensors measure temperature and humidity to ensure that the environment is within normal limits. One of the significant challenges in IoT deployment is device-to-device (D2D) device communication and security. However, currently, the security support for IoT communication protocols is weak. In general, MQTT protocol does not yet have overall security mechanism to secure communications. Information security demonstrates the need to protect data in terms of confidentiality, integrity and availability. One of the possible solutions to this problem is to add encryption algorithms to the MQTT communication protocol to be transmitted securely. In this work, the middleware broker system is built with Java Selvet to generate an identity encryption key using the Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) algorithm. The purpose of this approach to encrypt data before sending it to the MQTT protocol to secure the communication channel.
