Abstract

Roll waves propagating without deformation are non-trivial unsteady solutions to the shallow water equations governing open channel flows. Those solutions are continuously differentiable almost everywhere but contain discontinuities elsewhere. We present a concise review of the roll waves as weak solutions of the shallow water equations and conduct numerical experiments using two approaches, implicating the consistency of the theory with real-world phenomena.
