Abstract

The current study provides a comprehensive review and unified framework on emotional and cognitive factors underpinning driving behaviours and errors. In this article, we provide a conceptual framework that explains the relationship between cognitive, emotional, and personality factors and driving behaviours, including crashes, lane deviation, speeding, among others. In addition, we will discuss how aging impacts driving behaviours. Importantly, we show that driving errors and behaviours are related to emotional and cognitive factors, and impaired emotional and cognitive function impacts driving in older adults. Our study shows that by ameliorating emotional and cognitive processes in at risk populations, we may be able to help them drive safely. Importantly, we provide a comprehensive list of studies to conduct in the future.
