Abstract

Lung disease, which affects both adults and children, is on the rise worldwide. The following chapter provides a brief overview of some of the respiratory disorders currently affecting millions of people worldwide. The source of respiratory disease mortality and morbidity is uncertain; according to recent studies by the World Health Organization (WHO) and other agencies, nearly 400 million people worldwide suffer from mild to severe asthma and chronic obstructive lung disease (COPD) only. The pathophysiology of major lung diseases such as COPD, asthma, pneumonia, lung cancer, tuberculosis, and cystic fibrosis is discussed in this chapter, with their limitations on existing treatment approaches.
