Abstract
Novel drug delivery technologies and knowledge of skin anatomy have been revolutionary in healthcare. This chapter explores the intricate structure of the skin and the use of microneedles as a smart carrier for targeted drug delivery. To develop effective strategies for delivering drugs through the skin, it is essential to understand the layers of the skin, including the dermis, subcutaneous tissue, and epidermis. An innovative method of transdermal drug delivery that is both effective and safe is the use of microneedles. For controlled release profiles and to aid drug distribution in specified areas, these micrometer-sized needles can gently penetrate the skin. Microneedles have several potential medicinal uses due to their adaptability, such as cosmetic dermatology, immunization, and diabetes care. Clinical trials exploring the safety and effectiveness of drug delivery systems utilizing microneedles have yielded encouraging findings, showcasing enhanced therapeutic effects and patient compliance. New possibilities for microneedles in personalized healthcare and point-of-care therapies have emerged with their application to cutting-edge technology such as microneedle arrays and microneedle patches. The future of microneedles as smart carriers for delivering drugs has significant potential. Current scientific research focuses on improving the structure of microneedle devices, optimizing the loading and release kinetics of drugs, and exploring novel applications in regenerative medicine and cancer treatment. The ongoing advancement of microneedle technology has the potential to transform the domain of medication administration, offering novel opportunities for customized and patient-focused healthcare solutions.
