Abstract

Few studies have been conducted on RC beams strengthened with EB-FRP and subjected to fatigue loading, particularly in shear. The objective of this research was to examine experimentally the fatigue performance of RC beams retrofitted in shear using EB-CFRP sheets, that is with no increase in service load. Six tests were performed on full-size RC T-beams with three different steel stirrup spacing. The specimens were subjected to fatigue loading up to 6 million cycles, at a frequency of 3Hz. The applied stress ranged from 35% to 65% of ultimate monotonic strength of control beams. The test results confirmed the feasibility of using EB-CFRP shear-strengthening technique in extending the fatigue life of RC beams. They also demonstrated the existence of an interaction between transverse shear reinforcement and EB-FRP.
