abstract = "This study introduces our preliminary findings on developing a novel method to calculate the International Roughness Index (IRI)-a widely recognized indicator of road surface condition. Our approach involves an Internet of Things (IoT)-based system that calculates vertical displacement via tilt angle measurement, rather than relying on acceleration signals. The latter are prone to accumulating errors when converted to vertical displacement. To validate our method, we employed a scaled model of a vehicle and road, and further enriched our research through practical experiments conducted on actual roads. The initial outcomes of the validation phase demonstrate a significant correlation between the measured IRI and the IRI calculated from the road profile, indicating the potential accuracy and reliability of the proposed method.",
