Abstract
Background: Plant based nanoparticles are repoted to be ecofriendly and safe. Aim: To find out the cytotoxic effect of tamarind fruit pulp mediated copper oxide nanoparticles on Brine shrimp Materials and Method: 0.55 g of tamarind extract was mixed with 100 ml of distilled water to get a clear solution to which 0.318 grams of copper sulphate was added and kept in an orbital shaker for the synthesis of the nanoparticle. Absorbance was measured at regular interval by UV-Visible Spectroscopy and after confirming the formation of the nanoparticles, it was centrifuged and stored. A 6 well Elisa plate was taken and filled with saline water and 10 brine shrimp nauplii were placed in each well with proper care. Different volumes of the nanoparticles starting from 5 μl to 25 μl were taken in each well and the cytotoxicity was checked after 24 hours. Results and Discussion: The number of brine shrimps nauplii was counted and all the nauplii were alive on the first day. On day 2, only 9 nauplii were found alive 5 μL and 10 μL concentration; in 15 μL and 20 μL concentration, 7 were found alive and in 25 μL concentration, 6 nauplii were found alive. The maximum cytotoxicity was seen in 25 μl concentration. All the nauplii were alive in the control group without tamarind mediated copper nanoparticle. Conclusion: Present study, conclude that the, Copper oxide nanoparticles are safe at low concentration. The dose dependent cytotoxicity observed with tamarind mediated copper nanoparticles may be utilised for its application in cancer therapeutics after further in-vivo studies.
