Abstract

Evolution of wireless cellular technology from 3G to 4G is expected because of the growing demand for quality service. Considering rapid increase in the development of technologies, a new technology known as 5G has been introduced that addresses the limitations of existing 4G technology. In this article, the evolution of 5G, its architecture, emerging technologies, challenges, research areas, and immigration from 4G to 5G are discussed. 5G is generally characterized with global connectivity, low latency, and high data-transfer rate. 5G enhances cellular networks technology, and challenges such as high capacity and data rate are addressed. We present different research works in progress on 5G technology. Moreover, we discuss the role of fog computing in 5G networks. Fog computing being an extension of cloud computing plays an important role along with 5G networks. The fog computing aims to improve the latency and response time by providing the computer and storage facilities near to the end-user connected with 5G networks.
